Everyone visits Ubud for six hours in a minibus and leaves with the same photographs. Two or three nights change what the place is — cooler air, early mornings, and dinners the coast does not do.

The buses arrive around ten in the morning and leave by four. Everything memorable here happens outside that window: the rice terraces at seven when the light is low and nobody is there, the market before it turns into a souvenir aisle, dinner in the valley with the sound of the river. Two nights is the minimum that makes the drive worth it; three is better.
Mornings are the reason to be here. Walk the Campuhan ridge early, or take the terraces before the sun is high. Yoga and wellness are an entire economy in Ubud, and the good studios fill early.
Afternoons are for the things that need a driver: the water temples, a waterfall, the volcano road north, the craft villages on the way in. Any of them is half a day once you count the road.
Evenings are quiet and end early. Ubud does fine dining without a beach-club soundtrack, and it does it well.
Ubud villas sell the view and the valley: open-sided rooms, pools that appear to fall into the trees, staff who cook breakfast. Two things to check that do not apply on the coast — the stairs (many properties are built down a slope, which is charming until you carry a suitcase or a toddler), and how far the villa really is from town, because "Ubud" is used loosely for anything within half an hour of it.
The usual mistake is a day trip from Canggu — three hours in a car for four hours in a crowd. The version that works: two or three nights on the way in or out, with a driver handling the transfer and the stops on the way, so the drive becomes part of the trip rather than the price of it.
