When a driver makes sense
The airport. Landing is when you least want to negotiate. A car booked before you fly, with your name and your flight number, turns the arrivals hall into a short walk. Landing in Bali covers the rest of the first hours.
A night out in another area. Bali's nightlife is spread out, and the nights worth the drive are rarely next to where you sleep. Uluwatu's cliffs — Savaya, El Kabron — are at the far end of the island from Canggu and Seminyak, and the drive back after a long night is not one to improvise. A driver who waits means the evening ends when you want it to, not when a ride turns up.
A day across the island. Temples, waterfalls, rice fields and a lunch near Ubud are a day trip, not an errand: several stops, long roads between them, and a car that waits at each one. A dinner at Akar, the steakhouse of K Club in Tegallalang north of Ubud, is the kind of evening that only works with someone else driving back.
A beach club day on the west coast. Luna Beach Club sits on the Tabanan cliffs, west of Canggu, and the country roads around it are poorly lit at night. A scooter after an evening of drinks is a bad idea there; a car that waits is the plan.
A group. Two scooters and a car for six people means arriving at three different times. One car with a driver means one arrival — and nobody has to stay sober to drive.

Savaya is a clifftop club in Pecatu, Uluwatu, set 100 metres above the Indian Ocean between jungle and limestone cliffs, with pools and The Cube, the landmark that frames its horizon. El Kabron

El Kabron stands on the limestone cliffs of Pecatu in Uluwatu, above the Indian Ocean, and has been open since 2011. It has three parts: the Hedonism Lounge, an adults-only infinity-pool area with daybeds and sofas; the Sunset Theater at the cliff edge, set up for sunset dinners; and a Mediterranean restaurant serving seafood, oysters, paella and steak. Its sunset parties bring DJs with live saxophone, violin and trumpet, with the White Sunset Party, the Afro House Sunset Party and pool parties among the weekly regulars.

Akar, meaning “root”, is the steakhouse of K Club in Kedisan, Tegallalang, north of Ubud, set in the greenery of the jungle. Spread over two floors with two bars and an open kitchen, it grills Australian and Japanese cuts, Wagyu included, over charcoal, alongside seafood, charcoal-roasted bone marrow and a curated wine list. On Friday and Saturday nights dinner turns festive, with live DJs, dancers and a laser show. Akar has won Best Luxury Steakhouse in Indonesia at the World Luxury Restaurant Awards.
Luna Beach Club

Luna Beach Club is perched on the cliffs of the Tabanan coast, inside Nuanu Creative City by Nyanyi Beach, west of Canggu. Its bamboo architecture by Inspiral Architects won a Silver award for sustainable and green architecture at the 2024 International Architecture & Design Awards. The complex brings together two pools, jumping platforms and a water slide, Restaurant 369, the Utopia Cave Club and the Gardenia bamboo tree pods. DJs play through sunset, and evenings bring fire and light shows.

What to tell the concierge
- The date, and whether it is a single trip, an evening or a full day.
- The pick-up place: your villa or hotel, or the airport.
- For the airport, your flight number, not just a time.
- How many people, and how much luggage.
- The plan: the stops, the restaurant, the club, and whether the driver should wait.
- Children, so the car can be chosen to fit and any child seat asked for.
The concierge comes back with the car and the amount for that day; you decide. Nothing is booked until you have said yes.
Night-out logic
Book the return at the same time as the way out. The ride home is the part of a night that goes wrong, and it is the one you can arrange in advance. If the night is at a club, tell the concierge when you book the table: the table and the car can be arranged in the same conversation. For a night at Savaya, Zumana or Desa Kitsuné, check the venue's age rule before you set off, so nobody in the car is turned away at the door.
