Most seven-day plans for Bali fail the same way: they treat the island as small. It is small, but the roads are slow, and a week spent commuting between one base and everything else is a week half wasted. This itinerary moves you twice and keeps every day inside a thirty-minute radius.
The shape: three nights on the Canggu coast, two inland in Ubud, two on the Uluwatu cliffs. It works equally well reversed, and either way the airport is at the southern end, next to Uluwatu.
Day 1 — Land, and do nothing ambitious
Arrive, driver at the door with your name, villa checked, and dinner booked close to where you sleep at a sensible hour. Do not plan the club tonight. If you land in the afternoon, the beach at sunset is enough.
Day 2 — Canggu at its own pace
Morning on the beach or in the water, afternoon at a beach club, sunset from a daybed you reserved rather than queued for. This is the day the island sells itself.
Day 3 — The one big night
Dinner in Berawa, then whatever the week is offering — a club in Seminyak, a name DJ, a guestlist. Book the table before anything else; this is the evening that fills up first.
Day 4 — Move inland to Ubud
Take a driver and make the transfer the day: temples, a waterfall or the craft villages on the way, arriving in the afternoon. Ubud evenings are quiet and end early, which after three coastal nights is the point.
Day 5 — Ubud in the morning
Rice terraces or the ridge walk at seven, before the buses. Afternoon for a waterfall or a spa, dinner in the valley.
Day 6 — Move south to Uluwatu
Another driving day, this time to the peninsula. Arrive for lunch, spend the afternoon on a cliff terrace, and take the sunset from above the water — the best on the island, and worth the two nights it takes to see properly.
Day 7 — Slow, then the airport
Morning at the villa, an early lunch, and leave far more time for the airport road than the distance suggests. Late flight? A day room or a late checkout is easier to arrange than an afternoon spent in departures.
What to book before you fly
- The airport pickup, with your flight number.
- The one big night — the table, not just the restaurant.
- Sunset seats at any beach club on a Friday, Saturday or in July, August or late December.
- The two transfer days, as full-day drivers rather than point-to-point rides.
Everything else can be decided the morning of.
The two mistakes
Basing the whole week in one village. A day trip to Ubud from Canggu is three hours in a car for four hours in a crowd. Sleeping there for two nights costs you nothing extra and gives you the mornings.
Planning the evening and the sunset in different villages. Sunset in Uluwatu and dinner in Seminyak is a beautiful plan and ninety minutes of traffic in the middle of it.
