Miss Fish is a Japanese restaurant and late-night venue on Jalan Raya Semat, in the Berawa part of Canggu. Its own line is "where omakase meets the night": dinner starts with a chef-guided tasting or Japanese plates to share, and as the lights dim, the DJs take over. Reservations are essential, and the dress code is smart casual. FirstBali books it through the concierge.

What Miss Fish is

Miss Fish calls itself its own interpretation of modern Japanese dining in Canggu — "elegant, precise and effortlessly relaxed". The kitchen is led by executive chef Carlos Barvo, Barcelona-born and trained within Barcelona's Japanese culinary community, with Balinese head chef Putra Agustina, who spent years as a sushi chef before Miss Fish. The menu is rooted in Japanese tradition, reimagined with Latin American flavours and European technique.

The bar follows the same line: seasonal cocktails, house infusions and more than forty labels of sake and Japanese whisky, with sake or whisky pairings suggested for the omakase.

Where to sit

You choose your evening by choosing your seat:

  • The Omakase Bar, a glowing onyx counter where the chefs prepare each course in front of you. Seats are limited, so it is the one to book first.
  • The Lounge, intimate lighting and sofas, for cocktails and shared plates — and the room that becomes the party later on.
  • The Patio, open-air, brighter and quieter, for Canggu's evenings outside.

The Patio is family friendly; minors are not permitted in the Lounge.

What the kitchen does

The omakase — "I'll leave it up to you" — is a chef-guided tasting that changes with the season and the market. The restaurant describes its arc: lighter sashimi and nigiri first, then richer bites, perhaps a charcoal plate from the robata grill, then a refined finish. Wagyu, toro and fresh seafood often feature. If you are new to omakase, the team explains each course and adjusts for preferences.

À la carte, from the menu the restaurant publishes:

  • To start: Peruvian ceviche with leche de tigre, mango and chili; a soy-cured watermelon and wakame salad; Sakoshi Bay oysters.
  • Sashimi and new-style sashimi: scallop carpaccio with ponzu foam and kaffir lime oil, o-toro with caviar, and a tom yum shiromi of white fish.
  • Nigiri, rolls and hand rolls: hotate truffle, o-toro with foie gras, a foie gras giomaki, a salmon truffle hosomaki, and hand rolls on seaweed the kitchen dehydrates to keep it crisp against warm rice — one of the house signatures.
  • From the robata and the kitchen: octopus robatayaki, Wagyu carpaccio aburi, lobster chawanmushi, Kawagoe unaju of grilled eel, and Miyazaki Wagyu finished with burnt tequila.
  • Desserts: a choco truffle mousse with espresso ice cream, and a kemangi ice cream made with Balinese basil.

Vegetarian and vegan dishes are on the menu; tell your server, and give notice for a group.

The evening format

Miss Fish is dinner first, then a night out in the same room. The venue lists a live DJ every night, guest DJs on its calendar, and rotating themes, from vinyl evenings to menus inspired by Japanese festivals. On Sundays, its concept is ZOREN, a night that takes on a new theme every few months: dinner first, then a shift into music and performance. Line-ups change, so the concierge checks what is on for your date, and you can look at our events page.

Come early for the calmer, more intimate side of the room; stay later for the party. Once dinner is over, you can carry on at the bar or the standing areas, and a Lounge table for the party afterwards comes with a minimum spend that the venue sets.

Dress code

Smart casual. According to Miss Fish's own rules, sandals, flip-flops, Crocs, shorts, singlets, hoodies, sports jerseys and swimwear are not permitted. Our Bali dress code guide compares the rules of the island's clubs.

How to book a table

Tell the FirstBali concierge your date, the number of guests and the seat you want — Omakase Bar, Lounge or Patio — and whether you are coming for dinner, the party or both. Mention any occasion: the venue offers group packages, and decorations need its approval. We ask Miss Fish on your behalf and pass on its answer, including the deposit it asks for dinner reservations. The table is yours once Miss Fish confirms it.

Two house rules worth knowing: a dinner table is held for a set dining window, and late tables can be released, so arrive on time.

Getting there

Miss Fish is on Jalan Raya Semat in Tibubeneng, the Berawa street it shares with MîA. The venue offers valet service. A driver who waits is still the easiest way home after a late night; ask for one in the same request.
