Nusa Dua is Bali's resort area, and its evenings are dinners rather than clubs. Eat on the sand at Le Bleu, choose among the restaurants of The Apurva Kempinski on the cliffs — the aquarium dining room of Koral, Japanese at Izakaya by OKU, hot pot at Bai Yun — and watch the sunset at Rock Bar in nearby Jimbaran. For a party night, Uluwatu's cliffs are on the same peninsula.

Le Bleu

Le Bleu

Beach clubs · Nusa Dua

Le Bleu by K Club is a beachfront restaurant and beach club on Nusa Dua Beach, in the ITDC resort area, run by the K-Club Group. The look is French Riviera by way of Bali, all blue and white, with sunbeds, cabanas, terraces and an indoor dining room. The kitchen leans on seafood, from lobster linguine to yellowfin tuna tataki, with vegetarian and vegan options. The weekly programme mixes yoga, cocktail workshops, beach games and festive Sunday gatherings with a DJ.

Restaurants · Nusa Dua

The Apurva Kempinski Bali is a five-star resort on the cliffs of Nusa Dua, facing the Indian Ocean, and its dining spreads across several venues. Koral, which the hotel presents as Bali's first aquarium restaurant, serves set and tasting menus beside the tanks, adults only at dinner. Izakaya by OKU is a sister to OKU in Jakarta; Reef Beach Club sits on the sand beside a 42-metre infinity pool; Bai Yun serves hot pot and dim sum; L'Atelier by Cyril Kongo is a lounge with ocean views and Mediterranean tapas.

Rock Bar

Rock Bar

Bars · Jimbaran

Rock Bar is AYANA Bali's cliffside bar in Jimbaran, stretching some 270 metres along the rocks above the ocean, with 880 seats spread over 22 areas. Guests reach it by inclinator, watch the sun set over the sea, then stay as the DJs play on. The bar pours cocktails inspired by the colours of the sea alongside Mediterranean tapas built on Jimbaran Bay seafood. Non-resident visitors can reserve; the Round Deck is kept for villa guests and the Top Bar for hotel guests. Payment by card or QR only.

What Nusa Dua is

The Nusa Dua is a resort area in the south of Bali, on the Bukit peninsula, managed by InJourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). It began, in ITDC's words, as "the World Bank's first tourism project for Indonesia", and ITDC now bills it as "Bali's Finest Family-Friendly Resort Haven". It is a place of large hotels and meeting facilities: the area has hosted international gatherings such as the IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings.

What that means for a stay: calm, well-kept, with the beach and the resort at the centre of the day. It suits families, couples and anyone who wants the hotel to do the work. If you plan to go out most nights, read where to stay in Bali first: Seminyak and Canggu are where the late nights are.

Where to eat

Le Bleu, on Nusa Dua Beach

Le Bleu by K Club is a beachfront restaurant and beach club inside the ITDC area — in its own words, steps from the resorts. The look is the French Riviera by way of Bali, all blue and white, with sunbeds, cabanas, a terrace, a lounge and an indoor dining room for a rainy day. The kitchen leans on seafood, from lobster linguine to yellowfin tuna tataki, with vegetarian and vegan dishes, and halal options prepared with separate utensils and ingredients (pork is also served, so say so when booking). For a couple, Le Bleu sets a candlelit dinner on the beach with its own set menu. Parking is free. More in our Le Bleu guide.

The Apurva Kempinski, on the cliffs

The Apurva Kempinski is a five-star resort on the cliffs of Nusa Dua, facing the Indian Ocean, and its dining is a small neighbourhood of its own:

  • Koral, which the hotel presents as Bali's first aquarium dining room: set and degustation menus beside the tanks, modern cooking inspired by Indonesian coastal flavours. Koral caters only to adults at dinner; at lunch, adults with young children are welcome, provided the children stay seated. Smart casual: no sportswear, sleepwear or flip-flops, and no sleeveless tops for men.
  • Izakaya by OKU, a sister to OKU in Jakarta, for Japanese plates in a casual room.
  • Bai Yun, the Chinese restaurant, for hot pot and dim sum.
  • NAMI Teppanyaki, which the hotel announces as a new chapter for teppanyaki in Bali.
  • Reef Beach Club, on the beach beside the resort's infinity pool: charcoal-grilled meat and seafood, casual and family-friendly, and the hotel asks for advance reservation.
  • L'Atelier by Cyril Kongo, a lounge and bar with ocean views and Mediterranean tapas, for a drink after dinner.
  • Pala Restaurant & Rooftop Bar, set by a long pool in the gardens, with live cooking stations.

What to do at night

Dinner is the evening. In Nusa Dua the night is a long table: a beach dinner at Le Bleu, Koral for an occasion, Izakaya by OKU or Bai Yun for something easier, and a nightcap at L'Atelier.

Sunday at Le Bleu. The festive day of the week: the White Sunday Party brings a live DJ to the shore. The rest of the week mixes yoga, cocktail workshops and beach games.

The sunset at Rock Bar. In Jimbaran, nearby, Rock Bar is AYANA Bali's cliffside bar above the ocean, reached by inclinator. You watch the sun set over the sea, then stay as the DJs play on, with cocktails and Mediterranean tapas built on Jimbaran Bay seafood. Visitors who are not hotel guests can reserve; the Round Deck is kept for villa guests and the Top Bar for hotel guests, and payment is by card or QR only. See our Rock Bar guide.

A party night in Uluwatu. Uluwatu shares the Bukit peninsula with Nusa Dua, and it is where the island's cliff-top nights happen: the sunset parties at El Kabron, and Savaya, strictly 21+, for the night. Book a driver for the return: a private driver in Bali.

By day

The beach and the pool are the point. Le Bleu has beach chairs, sunbeds and cabanas, changing rooms and showers, and on Saturdays and Sundays children play at Le Petit Corner while the adults eat. Reef Beach Club at The Apurva Kempinski is the hotel's family-friendly beach club.

Off the sand, the concierge arranges private boat trips: a sunset yacht cruise, a day of island hopping to Nusa Penida, snorkelling where the manta rays pass, or dinner for two at sea.

Who it suits

  • Families, especially with young children: ITDC presents the area as family-friendly, and Le Bleu and Reef Beach Club both welcome children.
  • Couples after a calm stay, a beach dinner or an aquarium table at Koral.
  • Groups at a conference or a wedding, staying in one of the large resorts.
  • Anyone who wants a quiet base and is happy to be driven to the island's livelier areas on the nights they choose.

How FirstBali books it

Tell the concierge the date, how many you are, the restaurant or the kind of evening you want, and whether children are coming. The venue answers on availability and, for a beach seat, on the minimum spend it sets; you decide. The table is yours once the venue confirms it, and the car there and back can be arranged in the same message.
