Yes, you can rent a Jeep in Bali. FirstBali's fleet lists four four-by-fours: a Jeep Wrangler and a Mercedes-AMG G63 that you drive yourself, and a Land Cruiser VXR and a Toyota Fortuner that come with a driver. Each is delivered to your villa or the airport and arranged through the concierge, who checks the car for your dates before anything is agreed. To drive one yourself you need a licence that is valid in Indonesia — in practice, your national licence and an International Driving Permit.
The four-by-fours in the fleet
The transport page carries the live list; these are the names on it today.
To drive yourself
- Jeep Wrangler — self-drive, on request.
- Mercedes-AMG G63 — self-drive, on request.
With a driver
- Land Cruiser VXR — with a driver, on request.
- Toyota Fortuner VRZ GR — with a driver.
The Land Cruiser carries a long reputation. Toyota first launched it as the four-wheel-drive Toyota BJ, and describes it today as a vehicle that promises to "take you anywhere & everywhere and come back alive and safe", built on reliability, durability and off-road performance.
The photos on the transport page show the model and colour, not necessarily the exact car; the concierge confirms the car itself before you book.
With or without a driver?
Without a driver if the drive is the point: a Wrangler for a week of beaches and day trips, a G63 for arriving somewhere in style. You plan the route, you park, and you stay sober.
With a driver if the destination is the point. The British government's travel advice for Indonesia notes that foreign nationals involved in even minor traffic violations or accidents may be vulnerable to extortion, and suggests considering a private driver or a car with a driver. The Canadian government says the same: if you plan to rent a car, consider hiring a driver. A Land Cruiser or a Fortuner with a driver gives you the four-by-four without the road.
Many people do both: the Wrangler in daylight, a car with a driver for the evening.
The licence you need
Bali's rules. The Governor's circular for foreign tourists, launched in March 2025 and reported by the state news agency ANTARA, asks visitors to drive according to Indonesian rules: hold an international or national driving licence, follow traffic signs, not carry more passengers than the vehicle's capacity, never drive under the influence of alcohol, and use road-worthy four-wheel vehicles from a registered business.
Your home licence is not enough on its own. The British government is explicit: you cannot drive in Indonesia on a UK licence alone, but you can with an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in the UK. Canada tells its citizens to carry the IDP together with their national licence, and notes that local authorities may ask to approve a permit obtained outside Indonesia.
The IDP follows your licence. An IDP only allows the vehicle classes your home licence allows, and it is issued at home — the British one in the UK, the Canadian one through the Canadian Automobile Association — so get it before you fly. The scooter licence guide explains the same principle for motorbikes.
Residents. UK nationals living in Indonesia with a stay permit (KITAS) can apply for an Indonesian national driving licence.
Insurance. The British government advises checking with your travel insurer that you are covered, and making sure you have the appropriate licence before hiring any vehicle. Ask the concierge to set out the car's own terms before you agree to anything.
On the road
- Traffic drives on the left.
- Weather. Canada warns that driving conditions may be hazardous in the rainy season, when flooding can make roads impassable.
- After dark. Canada advises avoiding driving after dark outside major cities or major roads, as some drivers do not use lights.
- If there is an accident. The British government says you must wait for the police at the scene; Canada advises stopping, exchanging information and helping the other people involved. In an emergency, call 112.
- No drink-driving. The Governor's circular forbids it, and the evening is when a driver earns his place.
Where a four-by-four makes sense
A four-by-four is a day car: it suits the drives that take you away from the busy south. Akar, the steakhouse of K Club in Tegallalang, north of Ubud, sits in the greenery of the jungle — a lunch at the end of a morning drive. Luna Beach Club is on the cliffs of the Tabanan coast, west of Canggu. El Kabron, on the limestone cliffs of Pecatu in Uluwatu, is built around the sunset.
Akar
Restaurants · Ubud
Akar, meaning “root”, is the steakhouse of K Club in Kedisan, Tegallalang, north of Ubud, set in the greenery of the jungle. Spread over two floors with two bars and an open kitchen, it grills Australian and Japanese cuts, Wagyu included, over charcoal, alongside seafood, charcoal-roasted bone marrow and a curated wine list. On Friday and Saturday nights dinner turns festive, with live DJs, dancers and a laser show. Akar has won Best Luxury Steakhouse in Indonesia at the World Luxury Restaurant Awards.
Luna Beach Club
Beach clubs · Tabanan
Luna Beach Club is perched on the cliffs of the Tabanan coast, inside Nuanu Creative City by Nyanyi Beach, west of Canggu. Its bamboo architecture by Inspiral Architects won a Silver award for sustainable and green architecture at the 2024 International Architecture & Design Awards. The complex brings together two pools, jumping platforms and a water slide, Restaurant 369, the Utopia Cave Club and the Gardenia bamboo tree pods. DJs play through sunset, and evenings bring fire and light shows.
El Kabron
Beach clubs · Uluwatu
El Kabron stands on the limestone cliffs of Pecatu in Uluwatu, above the Indian Ocean, and has been open since 2011. It has three parts: the Hedonism Lounge, an adults-only infinity-pool area with daybeds and sofas; the Sunset Theater at the cliff edge, set up for sunset dinners; and a Mediterranean restaurant serving seafood, oysters, paella and steak. Its sunset parties bring DJs with live saxophone, violin and trumpet, with the White Sunset Party, the Afro House Sunset Party and pool parties among the weekly regulars.
If the day ends with drinks, swap the keys for a driver before sunset; the concierge can book both in one request. Getting around Bali compares every way to move.
What to tell the concierge
- The car, and a second choice.
- Self-drive or with a driver.
- The dates, and where you want the car delivered.
