Where to propose in Bali: sunset, sea and private tables

The best places to propose in Bali: a cliff at sunset, a candlelit table on the sand, a private room in the jungle, a boat at sea or your own villa. What each venue allows, and how to plan it.

To propose in Bali, choose the setting first: a cliff at sunset in Uluwatu or Jimbaran, a candlelit table on the sand in Nusa Dua, a private dining room in the jungle north of Ubud, a private boat at sea, or a villa where nobody is watching. FirstBali books the table, the boat or the villa through the concierge. For the set-up — flowers, a photographer, a message on the table — the concierge takes the request and checks with the venue what can be arranged; nothing is included until the venue confirms it.

Sunset on the cliffs

The west-facing coast is where Bali watches the sun go down, and two addresses there turn the moment into an evening.

El Kabron's Sunset Theater, at the cliff edge in Pecatu, is set up for sunset dinners. It is an adults-only area, apart from the pool and its party, and El Kabron asks for smart casual, resort wear or elegant attire there, with no swimwear. If it rains, Sunset Theater reservations are moved indoors to the oceanfront restaurant, subject to availability — so keep a second plan for the question itself.

Rock Bar, at AYANA Bali in Jimbaran, sits on the rocks above the ocean; you reach it by inclinator, watch the sun set over the sea, and stay as the DJs play on. Outside guests can reserve, but two areas are kept for residents: the Round Deck for villa guests, the Top Bar for hotel guests. It is a bar, not a private room, so it suits a proposal made in the open.

A table on the sand

Le Bleu by K Club, on Nusa Dua Beach, sets a romantic candlelight dinner by the beach: one table for two per reservation, with a special set menu. Its Intimate Package names engagement among the occasions it is built for, alongside pre-wedding shoots, elopements and anniversaries. Say it is a proposal when you ask; the venue answers with what it can prepare. The rest of a day there is on the Le Bleu page.

In the jungle

Akar, the K-Club steakhouse in Kedisan, Tegallalang, north of Ubud, lists a Romantic Dinner: an intimate four-course dinner in the greenery, with a glass of sparkling wine, a signature cocktail and a table set with fresh flowers and candlelight. For privacy, Akar says its Kanva Lounge is a private dining area often arranged for intimate and romantic private dinners. Avoid Friday and Saturday if you want quiet: dinner turns festive then, with DJs, dancers and a laser show. The dress code is smart casual.

Under the sea, almost

Koral, at The Apurva Kempinski in Nusa Dua, is the hotel's aquarium restaurant, and its tunnel tables are sold for two adults. Two of its rules matter for a proposal: specific seating requests are not guaranteed, so ask for the tunnel table early and get the answer in writing; and photography is permitted only with phone cameras while seated or at the bar lounge — professional cameras are not allowed. If a photographer is part of your plan, Koral is not the place for it.

At sea

FirstBali's boat catalogue has two trips that suit a proposal. Dinner for two at sea is a three-course dinner served on board a private yacht. Nusa Lembongan at sundown is a private cruise with snorkelling before the day goes. On a boat, the setting is entirely yours: no other tables, no passers-by. How charters work is in the Bali boat party guide.

In private: a villa

If the idea of an audience is the problem, a villa solves it: a terrace, a pool and nobody else. Ask the villa's own rules on decorations before you plan anything, and tell the concierge what you have in mind — a dinner at the villa, flowers, someone to take the photograph. We pass the request on and come back with what can actually be arranged; see private chefs in a Bali villa for how a dinner at home works. Browse the villas.

Planning it without giving it away

  • Say "proposal" in the first message. A venue sets a table differently when it knows, and some, like Le Bleu, sell packages for the occasion.
  • Check the photo rules. A venue can limit cameras, as Koral does. Ask before you book a photographer.
  • Have a rain plan. Outdoor sunset tables depend on the sky, and El Kabron moves its Sunset Theater indoors in bad weather.
  • Mind the dress code. El Kabron, Akar and Koral all publish one; none of them wants swimwear at dinner.
  • Book the car. A driver waiting means neither of you has to think about the way back. See transport.

Tell the concierge the date, the setting and anything the venue should know. We ask the venue on your behalf, and the table, the boat or the villa is yours once it confirms.

Questions we get asked

+Where is the best place to propose in Bali?

It depends on the moment you want: El Kabron's Sunset Theater or Rock Bar for a cliff at sunset, Le Bleu for a candlelit table on the sand, Akar's Kanva Lounge for privacy in the jungle, or a private boat or villa for no audience at all.

+Can FirstBali set up a proposal with flowers and a photographer?

The concierge takes the request and checks with the venue what can be arranged; nothing is promised or included until the venue confirms it. Some venues limit cameras, so ask before booking a photographer.

+Does Le Bleu do proposals?

Le Bleu sets a candlelight dinner for two by the beach, and its Intimate Package lists engagement among its occasions. Say it is a proposal when you ask, and the venue answers with what it can prepare.

+Can I propose on a boat in Bali?

Yes. FirstBali's catalogue includes a three-course dinner for two on board a private yacht and a private sundown cruise to Nusa Lembongan, arranged on request through the concierge.

+What happens to a sunset proposal dinner if it rains?

It depends on the venue. At El Kabron, Sunset Theater reservations move indoors to the oceanfront restaurant, subject to availability. Keep a second plan for the moment itself.

+Can I bring a photographer to a restaurant proposal in Bali?

Ask the venue first. Koral at The Apurva Kempinski, for example, allows only phone cameras and no professional cameras. The concierge checks the rule before you book.
