Kuta guide: Bali's first beach town, area by area
Kuta is the beach town by Bali's airport: a long west-facing sand, surf, Legian and Tuban on either side, and Zumana at Sunset Bay. How the area is laid out and who it suits.

Kuta is the beach town next to Bali's main airport: a long, west-facing stretch of sand with steady surf, busy streets behind it, and Legian, Seminyak and Tuban continuing the same coastline. It suits a first or last night on the island, a surf lesson and a sunset, and since 2026 it has a flagship beach club in Zumana, at Sunset Bay. This guide is the area at a glance; the evening has its own guide.
What Kuta is
Kuta is an urban village and the seat of Kuta District, in Badung Regency, in the south of Bali. It began as a fishing village, then became a tourist and surfing destination, which makes it the island's original beach town. It sits close to Ngurah Rai, Bali's main airport, and its beach runs on south past the runway towards Jimbaran.
The beach is the reason it exists. Kuta Beach is also known as Sunset Beach, and the name says what matters: it faces west, so the sun goes down over the sea in front of you every evening.
How the coast is laid out
Kuta is one piece of a continuous shoreline. Walking the sand or driving the coast road, you pass through several areas that feel quite different:
- Tuban, the southern end towards the airport, holds most of the large beachfront hotels. Zumana sits here, at Sunset Bay.
- Kuta itself, the centre, is the busiest part: the original beach, the surf, the streets behind the sand.
- Legian, to the north, is the commercial hub, with many restaurants and places to go out.
- Seminyak, further north again, is the quieter, more polished continuation, with its own guide.
There is no single centre to aim for. Pick your stretch of beach by what you want from it.
Who Kuta suits
- Travellers arriving late or leaving early. Being near the airport is Kuta's practical gift; the first night guide covers how to use it.
- Surfers. The beach is known for consistent waves, and surfing has long been part of Kuta.
- Sunset people. Few places in the south make the evening as simple: walk to the sand and face the sea.
- A base between north and south. From Kuta, Seminyak is one way along the coast and the Uluwatu cliffs are the other.
If you want quiet rice fields or a hidden cove, Kuta is not the place; where to stay in Bali compares the areas honestly.
Zumana, the flagship
The newest reason to stay for the evening is Zumana, a Savaya Group property that opened at Sunset Bay in August 2026, from the team behind Savaya in Uluwatu and Desa Kitsuné in Canggu. Designed by Rockwell Group, it is laid out as beachfront daybeds, poolside spaces, bars and an open-air dance floor, with Manuza as its restaurant and ZENÍA, a sculpture by Daniel Popper, at its heart.
It is open daily with a steady week: Zumana Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, headliners on Wednesdays and Fridays, a Thursday rotation that includes Made in Kuta, and Ritual of the Sun on Saturdays. Each night's page on the calendar shows its own terms; the venue's guestlist is free to join, every guest registers individually, and registration does not guarantee complimentary entry.

Beyond Kuta, for an evening
Kuta is a good base precisely because the rest of the south is within reach by car:
- North to Seminyak for dinner at Sardine and the night at Les Toilettes, see Seminyak nightlife.
- South to Jimbaran for a drink at Rock Bar, AYANA's cliffside bar above the ocean.
- Up to the Bukit for Savaya, the clifftop club in Pecatu that DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs ranks number one in Asia.
Sardine
Restaurants · Seminyak
Sardine by K-Club is a seafood restaurant on Jalan Petitenget in Seminyak, set in an open-air bamboo building that looks over a stretch of rice paddies, with a terrace for lunch or dinner. The kitchen cooks the daily catch (yellowfin tuna, scallops, snapper) in a modern Mediterranean style, with vegetables from its own farms and a vegetarian set menu. Evenings can run late: Les Toilettes, the hidden club on site, hosts DJs, and once a month The Gates of Bali brings fire dancers and aerial acts.
Rock Bar
Bars · Jimbaran
Rock Bar is AYANA Bali's cliffside bar in Jimbaran, stretching some 270 metres along the rocks above the ocean, with 880 seats spread over 22 areas. Guests reach it by inclinator, watch the sun set over the sea, then stay as the DJs play on. The bar pours cocktails inspired by the colours of the sea alongside Mediterranean tapas built on Jimbaran Bay seafood. Non-resident visitors can reserve; the Round Deck is kept for villa guests and the Top Bar for hotel guests. Payment by card or QR only.
Savaya Bali
Clubs · Uluwatu
Savaya is a clifftop club in Pecatu, Uluwatu, set 100 metres above the Indian Ocean between jungle and limestone cliffs, with pools and The Cube, the landmark that frames its horizon. Named the number-one club in Asia three years running (2024–2026) and fifth in the world in 2026 in DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs, it is open daily: Last Light every Monday, weekday nights, and international headliners at weekends. Strictly 21+, smart casual.
Getting around
Kuta's streets are busy, and the coast roads fill up around sunset when everyone heads to the sea at once. A scooter is the local habit, but for an evening out a car with a driver who waits is simpler: FirstBali arranges one through transport, and getting around Bali explains the options.
How FirstBali helps
Tell the concierge your dates and what you want from Kuta: a table at Zumana, a driver from the airport, dinner further up the coast. An assistant answers at any hour and the team works through the Bali day and evening; it checks what can be arranged and confirms only once the venue has.

It suits travellers who want the beach, surf and sunsets close to the airport, with Legian and Seminyak along the same coast. It is busy rather than secluded.

Because it faces west: the sun sets over the sea in front of the beach every evening.
