Akar is the steakhouse of K Club, in Kedisan, Tegallalang, north of Ubud. It grills Australian and Japanese beef over charcoal in a two-floor, semi-open-air building in the jungle, with two bars and an open kitchen. From Monday to Thursday the mood is relaxed; on Friday and Saturday dinner turns festive, with live DJs, dancers and a laser show.
What Akar is
Akar means "root". The restaurant belongs to the K-Club Group, which also runs Sardine in Seminyak and Le Bleu in Nusa Dua, and it calls itself a luxury steak restaurant and fine dining venue. The building is open to the forest — there is no air conditioning — with a terrace over the jungle, two bars that serve the same menu, and an open kitchen where you can watch the grill. Akar says it was named Best Luxury Steakhouse in Indonesia at the World Luxury Restaurant Awards 2025.
Akar is open every day, for breakfast and for dinner; there is no weekend brunch. For a private moment, the Kanva Lounge is set aside for intimate dinners, and the whole restaurant can be booked for an evening.
What the kitchen does
Akar describes its cooking as a fusion of Indonesian and Western cuisine, led by charcoal-grilled meat and seafood and guided by a farm-to-table approach to local produce. On the current dinner menu:
- To start: charcoal-roasted bone marrow with garlic and parmesan crust; a Wagyu beef tartare in three styles, one of them Indonesian with Balinese spices and sambal; truffle Wagyu carpaccio; spiced prawn hummus; and grilled Camembert.
- From the ocean: pan-seared barramundi, king prawns grilled over charcoal, octopus, and a whole wild lobster baked over charcoal with beurre blanc.
- From the land: Australian Black Angus striploin and tenderloin, Wagyu striploin, a grass-fed hanging tender and a herb-roasted baby chicken.
- Premium cuts: Japanese Miyazaki Wagyu tenderloin and picanha, and Australian Wagyu rump cap and tenderloin — or The Land Journey, a five-course steak menu for two.
- On the side: coconut rice grilled in banana leaf with green sambal, brown-butter mashed potato, and eggplant parmigiana with sambal balado.
Akar names its Australian Angus grain-fed rib and its chilli chocolate lava cake among its signatures. There are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and nut-free options, and halal dishes prepared separately — though pork is also on the menu. The bar pours signature cocktails such as the Akar Old Fashioned, made with a temu-tis and secang-orange infusion, and the Jungle Basil Smash; a wine list with pairing on request; and a cigar menu.
The evening format
- Monday to Thursday: a relaxed, sophisticated dinner, with a live DJ every evening.
- Friday and Saturday — Festive Dinner: an intimate dinner first, then the room turns into a high-energy lounge with live DJs, dancers, an aerialist performance and what Akar calls Southeast Asia's grandest laser show.
- Romantic Dinner: a four-course dinner with a glass of sparkling wine, a signature cocktail, flowers and candlelight.
Akar also holds occasional candlelit live-music dinners. Ask the concierge what is on for your date, or check the events page.
How to book a table
For a festive Friday or Saturday, book ahead. Tell the FirstBali concierge your date, the number of guests, the occasion — a birthday, a proposal, a romantic dinner — and any dietary needs. We ask Akar on your behalf; the table is yours once the venue confirms it.
For a group or a buyout, Akar works with an event coordinator and offers group packages. Booking the whole restaurant must be done at least a week ahead, with a deposit set by the venue.
What to wear
Smart casual. Akar asks guests to dress comfortably but neatly, and singlets are not permitted for men.
Families and access
Children are welcome, with a kids' menu, high chairs and colouring books. Pets are not allowed. The building has no ramps or lifts and no adapted restrooms, though reserved parking is available for guests with disabilities; tell us in advance and the team can help on request, when staff are available.
Getting there
Akar is on Jalan Raya Cebok in Kedisan, Tegallalang, in the hills north of Ubud — an inland trip from the coast. There is valet parking. The roads north of Ubud are unfamiliar after dark, so a driver who waits, or a night in Ubud, is the easy answer: ask for a car when you book, or find a villa nearby.
