Alphard with driver in Bali: airport, nights out, groups

The Toyota Alphard is a large luxury people-carrier built around its rear seats. FirstBali arranges one with a driver for the airport, full days and nights out, and a minibus for bigger groups.

An Alphard with a driver is the comfortable way to move a small group around Bali: a large Toyota people-carrier built around its rear seats, a driver who knows the roads, and a car that waits while you eat, swim or dance. FirstBali has the Toyota Alphard with a driver in its fleet, delivered to your villa or the airport, and arranges it through the transport page or the concierge. For a group too big for one car, there is a minibus.

Why the Alphard

Toyota introduced the Alphard, in its own words, "during a wave of minivan popularity". With the fourth generation, Toyota described the car as having grown from a minivan into an "ultra-spacious luxury saloon", designed with the comfort of the rear seats as the priority.

In Indonesia, Toyota's own dealer network calls it one of Indonesia's favourite cars and says people choose it for its comfort: captain seats, doors that open and close without effort, and a cabin roomy enough to move around in.

The Alphard in the fleet

The transport page lists the Toyota Alphard Facelift among the limousines: with a driver, delivered to your villa or the airport, on request. The photographs on the transport page show the model and colour, not necessarily the exact car; the concierge confirms the car before anything is booked. If you need a particular seat layout or space for luggage, say so in the request.

A day with a driver

A day with a driver is a car at your disposal rather than a single trip. The driver collects you at the villa, takes you from stop to stop, and waits at each one: a temple in the morning, lunch somewhere inland, a beach club for the afternoon, dinner, and the drive home. You set the plan in advance and adjust it as the day goes.

The UK government's travel advice for Indonesia suggests the same thing for a different reason: foreigners involved in even minor traffic incidents can be vulnerable to extortion, and it recommends considering a private driver or a car with a driver. Getting around Bali compares the other ways to move.

The airport

Bali's airport is Ngurah Rai International. Landing is when you least want to negotiate a ride: a car booked before you fly, with your name and your flight number, makes the arrivals hall a short walk. Send the flight number rather than a time, so the pick-up follows the plane, and say how many bags you have.

One day a year there is no airport run at all: on Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, the airport is closed for the whole day — see Nyepi in Bali. For the arrival itself, see landing in Bali and a VIP arrival in Bali.

Nights out

Bali's nights are spread out, and the ones worth the drive are rarely next to where you sleep. Savaya and El Kabron sit on the cliffs of Pecatu in Uluwatu; Rock Bar is on the rocks at Jimbaran; Zumana is on Sunset Bay in Kuta. A driver who waits means the night ends when you decide, not when a ride turns up.

Book the return when you book the way out — the ride home is the part of a night that goes wrong, and the one you can arrange in advance. Savaya and Zumana are 21+: check the age rules before everyone gets in the car.

Groups: when one car is not enough

For a group too big for one Alphard, the fleet has the Toyota Hiace Premio, a minibus with a driver, so everyone travels together. For a stag or hen weekend, a wedding party or a family reunion, one vehicle means one departure and one arrival, and nobody has to stay sober to drive. The alternative is two cars that travel in convoy. The bachelor party guide shows how the transport fits a group weekend.

What to tell the concierge

  • The date, and whether it is one trip, an evening or a full day.
  • The pick-up place: the villa, the hotel or the airport.
  • For the airport, the flight number.
  • How many people, and how many bags.
  • The plan: the stops, the restaurant, the club, and whether the driver waits.
  • Children, so the right car is chosen and any child seat asked for.

The concierge checks the car and the driver for your date and comes back to you with the amount; you decide. The car is yours once it has been confirmed.
