Club or bar in Bali: which night out to choose

A Bali club night means a door, a programme and often a table; a bar night means a drink, a conversation and more freedom. How the two differ, and how to fit both into one evening.

Choose a club in Bali when the night is about the music and the dance floor, and a bar when it is about a drink, a view and a conversation. A club night at Savaya, Zumana or Desa Kitsuné has a programme, a door with terms and a guestlist, a ticket or a table to plan; a bar such as Rock Bar or The Shady Pig asks less of you and lets the evening find its own pace. Many of the best evenings start in one and end in the other.

What a club night involves

The island's big club nights are planned events, each with its own page on our events calendar.

  • A programme. The night has a concept or an artist, and the sound follows it. Savaya runs "Last Light" on Mondays and international headliners at weekends; Zumana has Ritual of the Sun on Saturdays; Desa Kitsuné's Garden parties on Tuesdays and Fridays, "rain or shine".
  • A door with terms. All three are 21+ with a valid photo ID, a passport or a driver's licence. Mixed groups and couples are strongly preferred, and management decides at the door.
  • A way in. A free guestlist, registered individually for each night on the night's page, with complimentary entry before the cutoff shown there and reduced entry after; some nights are ticketed only; and the table, the only reserved space, with a minimum spend set by the venue for each night.

In town, Seminyak's two nightclubs work the same way at a smaller scale: MU:IN and Les Toilettes are both 21+, and Les Toilettes' smart dress code rules out flip-flops, sandals and sportswear.

What a bar night involves

A bar night is lighter to organise. You choose a place for its drinks or its setting, sit down and stay as long as you like.

  • The Shady Pig, Berawa. A speakeasy behind an unmarked door, where you need the password to get in. Cocktails lean experimental, using distillation, barrel ageing and fermentation, and DJs take over later in the night.
  • Rock Bar, Jimbaran. AYANA Bali's cliffside bar, reached by inclinator: guests watch the sun set over the sea, then stay as the DJs play on. Non-resident visitors can reserve, and payment is by card or QR only.
  • Restaurant bars in Berawa. Miss Fish has a Lounge for cocktails and shared plates, with DJs later in the evening and a smart casual dress code; Jade by Todd English has a cocktail bar and a daily DJ; at MOI the mood shifts after sunset and the evening turns into a party.
The Shady Pig

The Shady Pig

Bars · Berawa

The Shady Pig is a speakeasy on Jalan Pantai Berawa and the original bar of The Shady Family, the group behind The Shady Fox, The Shady Flamingo and The Shady Bunny. The theme is 1920s Birmingham bootleggers: the bar hides behind an unmarked door, and you need the password to get in. Cocktails lean experimental, using distillation, barrel ageing and fermentation, from the Shelby to a barrel-aged Negroni. Small plates, pinchos and sandwiches come with the drinks, and DJs take over later in the night.

Rock Bar

Rock Bar

Bars · Jimbaran

Rock Bar is AYANA Bali's cliffside bar in Jimbaran, stretching some 270 metres along the rocks above the ocean, with 880 seats spread over 22 areas. Guests reach it by inclinator, watch the sun set over the sea, then stay as the DJs play on. The bar pours cocktails inspired by the colours of the sea alongside Mediterranean tapas built on Jimbaran Bay seafood. Non-resident visitors can reserve; the Round Deck is kept for villa guests and the Top Bar for hotel guests. Payment by card or QR only.

Miss Fish

Miss Fish

Restaurants · Berawa

Miss Fish is a Japanese restaurant and late-night venue on Jalan Raya Semat in Berawa, Canggu, open since 2022. Executive Chef Carlos Barvo leads a seasonal omakase that pairs Japanese technique with European and Latin American influences. Guests choose between the Omakase Bar, a chef-guided onyx counter, the open-air Patio and the Lounge for cocktails and shared plates, and the bar holds more than 40 sakes and Japanese whiskies. Later in the evening, DJs take over. Dress code: smart casual.

The key differences

  1. Planning. A club night means checking the night's page, its terms and its cutoff; a bar night usually means choosing a place and, where the venue takes them, a reservation.
  2. Music. At a club the music is the event; at a bar it sets the mood, even when a DJ plays.
  3. Your place. At a big club, only a table is reserved, and it is yours once the venue confirms it. At a bar, the table you sit at is the evening.
  4. Conversation. A bar is where you can still hear each other. If the group wants to catch up, start there.
  5. The door. The partner clubs are 21+ with ID and prefer mixed groups and couples. A bar's own rules are the venue's to set, so check before you go.

Doing both in one evening

The classic Bali evening runs from bar to club:

  • Sunset drink, then the club. Rock Bar in Jimbaran for the sunset, then on to the Bukit or to Zumana in Kuta.
  • Dinner and a bar, then the Garden. Dinner at Ina Ré, then Desa Kitsuné's party on the same grounds on a Tuesday or a Friday.
  • Cocktails, then a Seminyak club. A drink in Berawa, then MU:IN or Les Toilettes.

If you plan the club part, mind the guestlist cutoff on the night's page: a long first stop can cost you complimentary entry. See dinner and a club night and a pre-party in Bali.

How to choose

  • First night, after a flight: a bar, or dinner with a bar, keeps it easy. See your first night in Bali.
  • A celebration with a group: a club table gives you a reserved place for everyone.
  • A date: a sunset bar, then decide together whether to go on.
  • A night for the music: a club, chosen by the night's artist.

How FirstBali helps

Tell the concierge the evening you have in mind. We check what can be arranged at the bar, send the club night's page, book the table with the venue and arrange the car with driver between the two, and tell you when the venue has confirmed. An assistant answers at any hour, and the team works through the Bali day and evening.

Questions we get asked

+Should I go to a club or a bar in Bali?

A club if the night is about the music and dancing, a bar if it is about drinks and conversation. Many evenings start at a bar and end at a club.

+Do Bali bars have a guestlist like the clubs?

The guestlists described here are those of Savaya, Zumana and Desa Kitsuné, registered on each night's page. For a bar, the concierge checks what can be arranged.

+What age do I need to be for a Bali club?

Savaya, Zumana, Desa Kitsuné, MU:IN and Les Toilettes are 21+. The partner clubs ask for a valid photo ID: a passport or a driver's licence.

+Can I go to a bar first and still get on the guestlist?

Yes, if you arrive at the club before the cutoff shown on the night's page; after it, entry is reduced rather than complimentary.

+Is there a bar in Bali with a DJ?

Several: Rock Bar's DJs play on after sunset, The Shady Pig and Miss Fish bring DJs later in the night, and Jade by Todd English has a daily DJ.
