Giselle is a Mediterranean restaurant on Jalan Tanah Barak in Canggu that brings the French and Italian Riviera to Bali: seafood, homemade pasta and plates to share, served in a dining room and a courtyard under the trees. It opens for dinner every day, and on Friday and Saturday nights the evening turns into Club 55, with DJs after dinner. FirstBali books your table through the concierge.
What Giselle is
Giselle was created by a group of friends with deep roots in hospitality, who call it "a house for friends, strangers, and stories" and sign the menu "a memoir of your endless summer". The house has two moods:
- The room: white linen, scalloped lamps, burgundy chairs, a lit staircase and a bar lined with wine bottles, with an open pass where the kitchen plates in view.
- The courtyard: white-clothed tables and rattan chairs under the trees, for dinner outdoors.
The kitchen cooks on a wood fire and builds the menu on local, responsibly sourced ingredients, "with a touch of Mediterranean elegance", in the restaurant's own words.
What is on the menu
The current menu reads like a Riviera dinner in courses you share. A few dishes from each part:
- Bites: a truffle croque monsieur, a sea bream tartlet with yuzu, smoked whitefish croquettes, merguez arancini, a Comté gougère with Ibérico ham.
- Plates: Jamón Ibérico Bellota, the house fried chicken (G.F.C.), a crab roll with beurre blanc on French toast, Wagyu beef tartare with a confit egg yolk, lamb kofta with harissa, and a wood-fired cauliflower with tempura, miso and pesto.
- Crudos: Hokkaido scallop with salsa verde and jalapeño, bluefin tuna carpaccio with capers, salmon gravlax with miso and yuzu, and a tin of caviar with brioche.
- The seafood platter: oysters, prawns, scallop crudo, salmon gravlax and tuna carpaccio on one tray, made for the middle of the table.
- The chef's specials: madai sashimi with a yuzu kosho vinaigrette, a whole sea bass baked in a salt crust and flambéed, served with a Noilly Prat beurre blanc, a Wagyu beef Wellington with foie gras, and French duck breast with a blackberry jus.
- Mains: charcoal-grilled red sea bream with sauce vierge, the catch of the day, grilled octopus with guanciale, a slow-braised beef cheek, and Wagyu cuts from the grill.
- Homemade pasta: truffle tortellini with Comté and Paris ham, crab linguine with a lemon and kombu butter, gnocchi cacio e pepe, and two risottos.
- Desserts: profiteroles with Grand Cru chocolate sauce, a millefeuille, tiramisu, a lemon tart with lemon sorbet, and a cheese selection.
Some of the chef's specials, such as the salt-crusted sea bass and the Wellington, take time to prepare: the menu says so next to them, so order them early. The online menu carries no dietary labels — tell the concierge about allergies or a vegetarian guest and we ask the restaurant before you go.
On the drinks side, the published menu lists a short run of dessert cocktails — an Espresso with vodka, coffee and Kahlúa, a Latte with Baileys and Frangelico, a Chocolate with cognac and caramel, an Amaretto Sour and a Chocolate Old Fashioned. Ask for the wine and cocktail list at the table.
Club 55: Friday and Saturday nights
On Friday and Saturday nights, Giselle becomes Club 55. The house line sums it up: "Dinner comes first, then everything changes." DJs take the decks once dinner winds down, and the restaurant says Club 55 "never asks guests to choose between good food and a good night".
Giselle publishes no separate entry rules for Club 55, so the simplest plan is the one the house describes: book dinner on a Friday or Saturday and stay. If you only want the late part, tell the concierge and we ask the venue how it works on your night. For what else Canggu does after dark, see Canggu nightlife, area by area.
Dress code and age
Giselle publishes no dress code and no age rule. The room is white linen and candlelight rather than sand and surfboards, so most people dress for dinner rather than for the beach. If you are bringing a teenager to a Club 55 night, ask the concierge first.
Groups and private dinners
Part of the restaurant can be reserved for a group, according to Giselle — useful for a birthday, a hen or stag dinner, or a work evening. Tell the concierge the occasion and the size of the group, and we ask what the venue can set aside. Our birthday in Bali guide covers the rest of the night.
Getting there
Giselle is on Jalan Tanah Barak, in the heart of Canggu, a short way from Berawa. Look for the entrance arch between potted trees, with the Giselle sign on the wall. Canggu's lanes are slow in the evening and busier still on a Club 55 night, so a driver who waits is the easiest way home — add one in the same request, or see our cars.
Around it, the evening can start or finish elsewhere in Canggu: Ina Ré at Desa Kitsuné for another night of sharing plates, or The Shady Pig on Jalan Pantai Berawa for a cocktail behind an unmarked door.
Ina Ré
Restaurants · Canggu
Ina Ré is the restaurant of Desa Kitsuné, the lifestyle village on Jalan Munduk Catu in Canggu. Chilean executive chef Cristian Encina brings together Mediterranean flavours and Latin American street food: paellas to share, ceviches, tacos, empanadas and wood-fired meats such as the Stockyard tomahawk. The space draws on Balinese arts and crafts, with handmade materials, weavings and traditional motifs, and includes private dining rooms for groups. Sunday brunch has its own menu, and so do Courtyard Saturdays.
The Shady Pig
Bars · Berawa
The Shady Pig is a speakeasy on Jalan Pantai Berawa and the original bar of The Shady Family, the group behind The Shady Fox, The Shady Flamingo and The Shady Bunny. The theme is 1920s Birmingham bootleggers: the bar hides behind an unmarked door, and you need the password to get in. Cocktails lean experimental, using distillation, barrel ageing and fermentation, from the Shelby to a barrel-aged Negroni. Small plates, pinchos and sandwiches come with the drinks, and DJs take over later in the night.
