Canggu guide: the area, its villages and how to use it

Canggu is a string of villages on Bali's southwest coast: Batu Bolong, Berawa, Pererenan. Where each one fits, what a day there looks like, and which FirstBali guides to read next.

Canggu is a stretch of Bali's southwest coast made of several villages that have grown into each other: Batu Bolong, Berawa, Pererenan and the lanes between them. It faces west over the sea, so the sunset is the hinge of the day, and it mixes beach clubs, restaurants, cafés, training clubs and villas. Choose your base by village, because in Canggu where you sleep shapes everything else.

The villages, one by one

Batu Bolong is the coastal heart: the beach, the cafés and the surf crowd. Regent Bali Canggu, IHG's beachfront resort and the first Regent in Indonesia, sits on Batu Bolong, and Zai Cafe serves Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food there from breakfast to dinner.

Berawa is where Canggu goes out to dinner and to the beach clubs. Atlas Beach Club and Finns Beach Club are both on the Berawa beachfront, and Jalan Pantai Berawa and Jalan Raya Semat hold many of the area's dining rooms. It has its own Berawa guide.

Pererenan, to the west, is the quieter end, with more villas and a slower pace. Riviera Group runs Riviera Trattoria there. For staying, see villas in Pererenan.

Central Canggu holds Desa Kitsuné on Jalan Munduk Catu: a lifestyle village by the Savaya Group with the French-Japanese brand Maison Kitsuné, where Café Kitsuné, the Ina Ré restaurant and a Maison Kitsuné boutique share a garden.

Restaurants · Canggu

Regent Bali Canggu is IHG's beachfront resort on Batu Bolong, on Canggu's southwest coast, and the first Regent in Indonesia. Designed by WATG with interiors by HBA, it has 150 rooms and suites. Two of its restaurants are led by Chef Andrew Walsh: Sazón, a Mediterranean neighbourhood hideaway, and CURE Bali, European cooking shaped by Asian flavours. The Beach House pairs its pool and ocean breeze with craft cocktails and seafood, and the resort is home to the first Regent Spa & Wellness.

Zai Cafe

Zai Cafe

Restaurants · Canggu

Zai Cafe is a modern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant on Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong in Canggu, serving from breakfast through dinner. Mornings bring flatbreads, a Greek salad with homemade feta, bowls and dips such as hummus, beetroot hummus, babaganoush and tzatziki. In the evening the menu turns to dishes like octopus with harissa and orzo, or grilled prawns with a sweet passion fruit sauce. Ceremonial matcha goes into drinks and desserts, and on Fridays a DJ sets the mood.

Desa Kitsuné

Atlas Beach Club

Atlas Beach Club

Beach clubs · Berawa

Atlas Beach Club sits on Berawa Beach and bills itself as the biggest beach club in the world. Its signature beanbags sit right on the sand facing the sea, beside a vast pool and a pool bar where DJs play through the day. Daybeds and sofas are spread across distinct zones, from The Deck restaurant overlooking the beach to the Party Side in front of the stage. Daily shows draw on the four elements, and a beachfront padel court and a 100-metre flying fox complete the site.

Finns Beach Club

Finns Beach Club

FINNS Beach Club stretches along the beachfront at Berawa, in Canggu, under a bamboo structure designed by PBM Architecture. It is adults-only and divided into several party zones, from FINNS Beach Party and FINNS Garden Party to FINNS Grey Goose Party and FINNS VIP Party, with pools, swim-up bars, private cabanas, dance floors and restaurants spread across the site. Resident DJs and live singers keep an all-day party going every day, and the club also hosts private events, birthdays and corporate groups.

Going out

Canggu's evening runs from beach club to dinner to a bar or a party. We have written it up in detail in Canggu after dark, and the beach clubs have their own guide.

The flagship night in the area is Desa Kitsuné's garden party, every Tuesday and Friday, rain or shine. Like the other Savaya Group venues, it is 21+ with a valid photo ID, and each night's terms, guestlist or tickets, are on that night's own page. Joining a list is free; entry is complimentary before that night's cutoff, which at Desa Kitsuné is earlier for men, and registration does not guarantee complimentary entry.

For a quieter drink, The Shady Pig on Jalan Pantai Berawa is a bootlegger-themed speakeasy behind an unmarked door: you need the password to get in.

Eating

Canggu's dining spans Mediterranean, Japanese, Asian and steak, much of it in Berawa. Rather than repeat it here, see the best restaurants in Canggu, by occasion and Berawa's restaurants.

Staying

Canggu is villa country as much as hotel country. Our Canggu villa guide covers how to choose, and where to stay in Bali sets Canggu against the rest of the island. As a rule of thumb:

  • Batu Bolong if you want to walk to the beach and cafés.
  • Berawa if beach clubs and dinners are the point of the trip.
  • Pererenan for space and quiet, with the rest of Canggu close by.

Browse what is available on our villas page.

Getting around

Canggu's lanes are narrow and the evening traffic is heavy, especially around sunset. Most visitors either ride a scooter, with the right licence, or use a driver. Our getting around Bali guide covers both, and transport lists the vehicles FirstBali can arrange with a driver. For a night out, plan the ride home before you leave.

Practical points

  • ID: clubs and many bars are 21+; carry a valid photo ID, a passport or a driver's licence.
  • Dress: beachwear works by day; venues set their own standard at night. See the club dress code.
  • Emergencies: call 112.
