Jimbaran is a fishing village and resort bay in the south of Bali, just south of the main airport where the island narrows into the Bukit Peninsula. It is known for seafood grilled on the beach and for its large resort hotels, and it makes a calm base within reach of the Uluwatu cliffs, Nusa Dua and Kuta. This guide is the area at a glance; the evening meal has its own guide.

What Jimbaran is

Jimbaran is a village and tourist resort administered under South Kuta District, in Badung Regency. The same district takes in the whole Nusa Dua peninsula, which tells you where Jimbaran sits: at the neck of the Bukit, the limestone peninsula that forms Bali's southern tip, with the airport just to the north.

It began, and remains, a fishing village. That is still the first thing people come for: the bay is lined with seafood restaurants, and the custom is to choose your seafood and have it grilled, generally over a fire of coconut husks rather than charcoal.

How the bay is laid out

Think of Jimbaran in three parts:

  • The beach and the bay. Kuta Beach runs south past the airport into Jimbaran, so the sand is one long curve. The seafood restaurants sit along it, facing the water.
  • The resort hotels. Jimbaran is home to numerous five-star resorts, spread along the bay and up onto the higher ground towards the Bukit.
  • The cliffs. Where the land rises to the south-west, the coast turns to rock above the ocean. AYANA's Rock Bar is here.

There is no busy main street to aim for, which is much of the appeal.

Who Jimbaran suits

  • Travellers who want a quieter base in the south. You are near the airport without being in the crowds of Kuta.
  • Seafood lovers. The beach dinner is the local institution; Jimbaran dinner covers how to plan the evening.
  • Anyone heading to the Bukit at night. Savaya and the Uluwatu clubs are on the same peninsula, so Jimbaran works as a base for them.

If you want a lively street of bars outside your door, Legian or Seminyak fit better; where to stay in Bali compares the areas.

Rock Bar, the evening landmark

Rock Bar is AYANA Bali's cliffside bar in Jimbaran, stretched along the rocks above the ocean. Guests go down by inclinator, watch the sun set over the sea, and stay as the DJs play on. The drinks are cocktails inspired by the colours of the sea, with Mediterranean tapas built on Jimbaran Bay seafood. Non-resident visitors can reserve; some areas are kept for hotel and villa guests, and payment is by card or QR only. The Rock Bar guide goes into detail.

From Jimbaran to Savaya

The clearest reason to base yourself here for nightlife is Savaya, on the clifftop at Pecatu in Uluwatu, on the same peninsula. DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs poll ranks it number one in Asia. Its week has a shape: Monday is Last Light, a sunset set from The Cube; weekends bring headliners; Sundays are People of the Sun.

Savaya's guestlist is the venue's own: you register individually on the night's page and receive a digital ticket by email. Joining is free; entry is complimentary before the cutoff shown on that page and reduced after, registration does not guarantee complimentary entry, and mixed groups and couples are strongly preferred. Some nights are ticketed only. Entry is 21+ with a passport or driving licence, the venue is cashless and bags are searched. A table is the only reserved space, with a minimum spend set by the venue for the night; FirstBali books it with Savaya and it is yours once the venue confirms it.

  • The Apurva Kempinski in Nusa Dua, a cliffside resort whose venues include Koral, an aquarium restaurant, and L'Atelier, a lounge with ocean views.
  • Zumana, at Sunset Bay in Kuta, north of the airport, for a beach club evening.
