Go to Zumana for the sea: a beach club on the sand at Sunset Bay in Kuta, open every day, where an afternoon on a daybed turns into a sunset and then a dance floor. Go to Desa Kitsuné for a garden: a lifestyle village in Canggu with a café, a restaurant and a boutique, whose Garden hosts the party every Tuesday and Friday, rain or shine. Both are Savaya Group venues, both are 21+ and smart casual, and both use the same kind of free guestlist, with different windows.

Setting: the beach or the garden

Zumana is on the beachfront at Sunset Bay, on Jalan Kartika Plaza in Kuta. Designed by Rockwell Group, it has beachfront daybeds, poolside spaces, bars, an open-air dance floor and a restaurant, Manuza. At its centre stands ZENÍA, "The Eternal Host", a 10-metre sculpture by Daniel Popper made with Balinese artisans from Ubud.

Desa Kitsuné describes itself as "a unique lifestyle village located in the heart of Canggu"; desa means village in Indonesian. Its 5,000 m² garden holds Café Kitsuné, the Ina Ré restaurant, a Maison Kitsuné boutique and the Garden where the parties take place. It is not on the beach.

Day or night

Zumana is a day that becomes a night. Its own site describes three moments: by day, "the shore wakes slowly"; then the sunset by the water; then "When the sun drops, the shore transforms. The music rises, the energy deepens." Arriving in the afternoon is the natural way to do it.

Desa Kitsuné is an evening that becomes a party. You can come for coffee or dinner, and on Tuesdays and Fridays stay as the Garden turns into the dance floor. The venue's own line is "Relax, dine & celebrate."

The week

  • Zumana is open daily. Zumana Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are the regular days; Wednesdays and Fridays are headliner nights; Saturday is Ritual of the Sun, usually with a guest; Thursdays rotate between ZENÍA, SENJA, Zumana Thursday and Made in Kuta. The full week is in the Zumana weekly nights.
  • Desa Kitsuné parties on Tuesdays and Fridays. Tuesdays bring guest DJs; Fridays, in the venue's words, are about "celebrating and supporting local talent", with DJs who are "Bali based from international backgrounds". Occasional one-off nights fall on other days. The two nights are compared in Desa Kitsuné on Tuesday and Friday.

Both put local talent forward: Desa Kitsuné every Friday, and Zumana once a month with Made in Kuta, "Zumana's signature monthly Thursday celebration, inspired by the spirit of Kuta."

The guestlist

At both, FirstBali gives you the link to the night's guestlist page; you register yourself, each person for each event, and a digital ticket arrives by email. Joining is free. Registration does not guarantee entry, and mixed groups and couples are strongly preferred. The windows are where they differ:

  • Zumana: on its regular days, Sunday to Tuesday, complimentary entry runs during an afternoon window, with reduced entry after it. Wednesday and Friday headliner nights vary — some have a guestlist before a cutoff, some are ticketed only.
  • Desa Kitsuné: complimentary entry before a cutoff that is earlier for men than for women, reduced entry after, and later in the night a full-price tier for men. Many nights from November onwards are ticketed only.

The exact cutoff is on each night's page. Step by step: the Zumana guestlist and the Desa Kitsuné guestlist.

The door

Both are 21+ with ID and ask for smart casual. Both refuse beer-branded singlets, cut-off clothing, sportswear and flip-flops.

  • Zumana adds work jeans or denim, and allows swimwear in the pools only. Its ticket pages describe the look as "upscale beach chic".
  • Desa Kitsuné adds boots, hard-sole shoes, chains, baggy or torn clothing.

Tables

At both, a table is the only reserved space, with a minimum spend set by the venue for each night; we do not quote it. At Zumana, a table is also the only way to be allowed re-entry, and the reserved spaces include beachfront daybeds and poolside areas. Each night's Table button on the events calendar opens the venue group's own table map when one is published. FirstBali books the table with the venue on your behalf; it is yours once the venue confirms it.

Food

Zumana has Manuza, its restaurant on site. Desa Kitsuné has Ina Ré for dinner and Café Kitsuné by day, which makes dinner followed by the party an easy plan on a Tuesday or a Friday.

Who each suits
