Long lunch in Bali: where an afternoon at the table works

A long lunch in Bali, from venues that say they serve one: Sardine above the Seminyak rice paddies, Le Bleu on Nusa Dua Beach, Ina Ré in Canggu, El Kabron and Atlas by the sea. Booked through the concierge.

For a long lunch in Bali, the one venue in our catalogue that uses the words is Sardine in Seminyak, which promises "a long, breezy lunch where the view is as good as the service", over rice paddies. Close behind, by their own descriptions: Le Bleu on Nusa Dua Beach, Ina Ré at Desa Kitsuné in Canggu, and the restaurants of El Kabron and Atlas facing the ocean. FirstBali books the table through the concierge.

Sardine, Seminyak: the long lunch by name

Sardine is the K-Club Group's seafood restaurant on Jalan Petitenget, in an open-air bamboo building that looks over a stretch of rice paddies, with a terrace for lunch or dinner. Its own FAQ describes "a long, breezy lunch where the view is as good as the service", and its lunch menu is introduced as "a relaxed Bali lunch" of seasonal dishes and local seafood.

The kitchen cooks the daily catch, yellowfin tuna, scallops, snapper, in a modern Mediterranean style, with vegetables from its own farms and a vegetarian set menu. Its Pasta Day menu is, in Sardine's words, "perfect for a relaxed lunch or a casual afternoon". After lunch the restaurant moves on to tapas and sunset drinks, so a long lunch can simply carry on. More in the Sardine guide.

Le Bleu, Nusa Dua: lunch on the sand

Le Bleu by K Club is a beachfront restaurant and beach club on Nusa Dua Beach, all blue and white, with sunbeds, cabanas, terraces and an indoor dining room. It serves lunch and dinner, and the kitchen leans on seafood, from lobster linguine to yellowfin tuna tataki, with vegetarian and vegan options.

For families, Le Bleu runs Le Petit Corner on Saturdays and Sundays, where children play while the adults eat. It calls its Sunday "the ultimate beachfront Sunday". See the Le Bleu guide.

Ina Ré, Canggu: lunch in the village

Ina Ré is the restaurant of Desa Kitsuné, the Savaya Group's garden village in Canggu, and it serves lunch and dinner daily. Its chef brings together Mediterranean flavours and Latin American street food: paellas to share, ceviches, tacos, empanadas and wood-fired meats. Sunday brunch has its own menu, and so do Courtyard Saturdays. Private dining rooms suit a group that wants the afternoon to itself. See Ina Ré's Sunday brunch.

By the ocean: El Kabron, Atlas, Reef Beach Club

El Kabron, on the limestone cliffs of Pecatu, has a Mediterranean restaurant serving seafood, oysters, paella and steak at lunch and dinner. Children are allowed only in the restaurant area; the infinity-pool Hedonism Lounge is adults only. A lunch there sits naturally before the cliff's sunset.

Atlas Beach Club, on Berawa Beach, presents The Deck, its restaurant overlooking the beach, as the place for lunch and a golden-hour dinner.

Reef Beach Club, on the sand at The Apurva Kempinski in Nusa Dua, describes an all-day atmosphere that shifts naturally from family-friendly mornings, with all-day dining. See the Apurva Kempinski dining guide.

El Kabron

El Kabron

Beach clubs · Uluwatu

El Kabron stands on the limestone cliffs of Pecatu in Uluwatu, above the Indian Ocean, and has been open since 2011. It has three parts: the Hedonism Lounge, an adults-only infinity-pool area with daybeds and sofas; the Sunset Theater at the cliff edge, set up for sunset dinners; and a Mediterranean restaurant serving seafood, oysters, paella and steak. Its sunset parties bring DJs with live saxophone, violin and trumpet, with the White Sunset Party, the Afro House Sunset Party and pool parties among the weekly regulars.

Atlas Beach Club

Atlas Beach Club

Beach clubs · Berawa

Atlas Beach Club sits on Berawa Beach and bills itself as the biggest beach club in the world. Its signature beanbags sit right on the sand facing the sea, beside a vast pool and a pool bar where DJs play through the day. Daybeds and sofas are spread across distinct zones, from The Deck restaurant overlooking the beach to the Party Side in front of the stage. Daily shows draw on the four elements, and a beachfront padel court and a 100-metre flying fox complete the site.

The Apurva Kempinski

The Apurva Kempinski

Restaurants · Nusa Dua

The Apurva Kempinski Bali is a five-star resort on the cliffs of Nusa Dua, facing the Indian Ocean, and its dining spreads across several venues. Koral, which the hotel presents as Bali's first aquarium restaurant, serves set and tasting menus beside the tanks, adults only at dinner. Izakaya by OKU is a sister to OKU in Jakarta; Reef Beach Club sits on the sand beside a 42-metre infinity pool; Bai Yun serves hot pot and dim sum; L'Atelier by Cyril Kongo is a lounge with ocean views and Mediterranean tapas.

Lunch, then the night

A long lunch does not have to end the day. Sardine shares its address with Les Toilettes, the group's club, so lunch can turn into a late night in one place. In Canggu, Desa Kitsuné's Garden hosts parties every Tuesday and Friday, "rain or shine". Savaya's Last Light on Mondays is a sunset set from The Cube.

For the guestlist, each guest registers on the night's page; entry is complimentary only before that night's cutoff, and the partner clubs are 21+. See dinner and a club night.

Our advice for a long lunch

None of this is a venue rule.

  • Book the table. A long lunch is easier at a table you know is yours; ask for the terrace or the view when you book.
  • Plan the car. With a driver, nobody has to watch the wine list; see a private driver in Bali.
  • Dress for the next stop. If the afternoon may end in a club, check its dress code first; swimwear stays at the beach.
  • Bring the group together: for a larger table, see group dinners in Bali.
