The best restaurants in Uluwatu are the ones facing the ocean at sunset. El Kabron in Pecatu serves Mediterranean seafood at its oceanfront restaurant and romantic dinners in its adults-only Sunset Theater. White Rock Beach Club on Melasti Beach runs a covered restaurant for a long day by the water. How dinner works on the Bukit
Uluwatu sits on the Bukit, the limestone peninsula at the southern tip of Bali, with Pecatu, Ungasan, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua around it. The restaurants here are rarely on a street you can stroll: they are on cliffs, beaches and inside resorts, each one a destination. Two things follow. Plan the evening around the sunset, because that is when every sea-facing seat is wanted. El Kabron: Mediterranean on the ocean's edge
El Kabron, on the cliffs of Pecatu, calls its dining room a Mediterranean oceanfront restaurant: fresh seafood, oysters on ice, steak and paella, at lunch and at dinner, with the ocean and the sunset in front of you.
For an occasion, the Sunset Theater is a theatre-style dining space at the edge of the ocean, made for romantic dinners. It is adults-only; children are welcome only in the restaurant area, always with an adult. If the weather turns, Sunset Theater bookings move indoors to the restaurant.
The house rules are worth reading before you go: smart casual, resort wear or elegant attire in the restaurant and the Sunset Theater, a shirt or cover-up for men, and no swimwear, singlets, sportswear or costumes. Share dietary needs before you arrive; outside food and drink, cakes included, are not allowed. El Kabron states that reservations are non-refundable and cannot be moved to another date. White Rock Beach Club: a long day on Melasti
White Rock Beach Club sits on Melasti Beach in Ungasan. Its large covered restaurant serves local and international dishes made with locally and ethically sourced ingredients, and at the bar you can ask for "bartender's choice". It suits a day rather than a dinner: daybeds, sofas and cabanas around the pools, a kids' pool and a kids' menu for families, the sunset, then dinner without moving. Jimbaran: dinner at Rock Bar
Rock Bar is AYANA Bali's bar on the rocks above the ocean. After the sunset, dinner is Mediterranean, built on the catch of Jimbaran Bay. Nusa Dua: the resort tables
On the other side of the Bukit, Nusa Dua is calmer and its dinners are its evenings. The Apurva Kempinski, on the cliffs, gathers several restaurants: Koral beside aquarium tanks, adults only at dinner; Izakaya by OKU and NAMI Teppanyaki for Japanese; Bai Yun for hot pot and dim sum; Reef Beach Club for the grill on the beach. Le Bleu, on Nusa Dua Beach, puts seafood at the centre, offers vegetarian and vegan dishes and halal options prepared with separate utensils (pork is also served), and sets a candlelit dinner by the beach with a set menu for two. The Apurva Kempinski Bali is a five-star resort on the cliffs of Nusa Dua, facing the Indian Ocean, and its dining spreads across several venues. Koral, which the hotel presents as Bali's first aquarium restaurant, serves set and tasting menus beside the tanks, adults only at dinner. The look is French Riviera by way of Bali, all blue and white, with sunbeds, cabanas, terraces and an indoor dining room. The kitchen leans on seafood, from lobster linguine to yellowfin tuna tataki, with vegetarian and vegan options. The weekly programme mixes yoga, cocktail workshops, beach games and festive Sunday gatherings with a DJ.
