Breakfast in Bali: four morning tables, Canggu to Ubud
Where to have breakfast in Bali: shakshuka and dips at Zai Cafe, Parisian coffee and pastries at Café Kitsuné, breakfast in the jungle at Akar in Ubud, and by the pool at Luna.

For breakfast in Bali, four addresses in our catalogue serve in the morning, by their own account. In Canggu, Zai Cafe on Batu Bolong has a full breakfast menu of eggs, dips and flatbreads, and Café Kitsuné at Desa Kitsuné pours its signature coffees with sweet and savoury pastries. North of Ubud, Akar serves breakfast in the jungle. West of Canggu, Luna's Restaurant 369 serves breakfast by the pool. Which one depends on where you slept and what the day holds.
Zai Cafe, Batu Bolong: the full breakfast
Zai Cafe calls its kitchen modern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern, and it works as two restaurants in one: a breakfast café and a dinner table, each with its own menu. Breakfast is the one people come back for.
- Eggs: two kinds of shakshuka and Turkish eggs.
- Dips and bread: hummus, beetroot hummus, babaganoush and tzatziki with flatbreads.
- Lighter: bowls, avocado toast, a Greek salad with homemade feta.
- Something different: savoury waffles.
- The big one: the Big Breakfast Zai.
Ceremonial matcha goes into the drinks. It is a breakfast to sit down to with friends rather than a coffee on the run, and it sets up a beach morning in Canggu well. More in the Zai Cafe guide.
Café Kitsuné, Canggu: coffee and pastries
Café Kitsuné is the coffee house inside Desa Kitsuné, the lifestyle village on Jalan Munduk Catu. It is the coffee side of the Paris brand Maison Kitsuné, and it promises, in its own words, "a taste of Paris in the heart of Bali": signature coffees, a matcha latte, sweet and savoury pastries, and pancakes on the list.
Be clear about what it is: a café, not a full breakfast kitchen with eggs and plates. That is its charm — a croissant-and-coffee morning in a garden, with no booking and no dress code. The same grounds hold Ina Ré, the village's restaurant, and the Garden, which becomes a party every Tuesday and Friday, rain or shine. So a morning coffee here can be the start of a whole day in one place. More in the Café Kitsuné guide.
Akar, Tegallalang: breakfast in the jungle
Akar — "root" — is the K Club steakhouse in Kedisan, Tegallalang, north of Ubud, set in the greenery of the jungle over two floors with an open kitchen. It is known for charcoal-grilled cuts at dinner, but it is open every day for breakfast too; there is no weekend brunch.
It suits a morning in the Ubud hills: breakfast first, then the rice terraces and villages of the area while the day is fresh. On Friday and Saturday nights the same room turns festive, with DJs, dancers and a laser show — a very different place from the quiet morning. More in the Akar guide.
Luna, Tabanan coast: breakfast by the pool
Luna Beach Club sits on the cliffs of the Tabanan coast, inside Nuanu Creative City by Nyanyi Beach, west of Canggu. Its Restaurant 369 is a bamboo dining room with an open kitchen looking over the beach club, and it serves breakfast by the pool in the morning, cocktails and light plates by day, and turns into a supper club after dark.
Breakfast here is the start of a long day: the pools, the jumping platforms, the water slide into the Utopia Cave Club, the sunset and the fire and light shows. Children are welcome at the main pool and the restaurant by day. More in the Luna guide.
Which one for what
- A proper sit-down breakfast with friends: Zai Cafe.
- Coffee and a pastry in a garden: Café Kitsuné.
- Staying in Ubud: Akar, before the rice terraces.
- A whole day at the pool: Luna, breakfast included in the plan.
- After a late night: Zai Cafe's eggs and dips, then the beach — see Canggu restaurants for lunch and dinner.
Do you need to book breakfast?
Café Kitsuné needs no booking. For a table for a group at Zai Cafe, for breakfast at Akar, or for a pool seat at Luna, tell the concierge the day and how many you are; we ask the venue, and the table is yours once it confirms. A seat at Luna comes with a food and drink credit that Luna sets for the day, which we pass on before you decide.
Our assistant replies at any hour; the team picks up through the Bali day and evening. If breakfast is in Ubud or Tabanan and you are staying elsewhere, a driver for the morning goes in the same conversation — see our cars.
