Café Kitsuné Bali is the coffee house inside Desa Kitsuné, the lifestyle village on Jalan Munduk Catu in Canggu. It serves the brand's signature coffees with sweet and savoury pastries and promises, in its own words, "a taste of Paris in the heart of Bali". The same grounds hold Ina Ré, a Maison Kitsuné boutique and the Garden, which becomes a party every Tuesday and Friday.

What Café Kitsuné is

Café Kitsuné is the coffee side of Maison Kitsuné, the Paris lifestyle brand founded by Gildas Loaëc and Masaya Kuroki, which began as a music label and grew into fashion and a chain of cafés in cities such as Paris, Tokyo, London and New York. The Bali café describes the brand as one that "pays tribute to the pleasure of enjoying a quality coffee in locations that are both modern, cosmopolitan and welcoming".

It takes the coffee itself seriously. Café Kitsuné calls itself "a place dedicated to the coffee experience", with the aim to "master every stage of the process, from sourcing the bean right through to the degustation". The brand roasts its own: a roastery in Okayama, in Japan, and later Café Kitsuné Vertbois, its first roastery in Europe, in Paris.

What to order

The café's page names "a selection of sweet and savoury pastries as well as the range of signature coffees". Among the things it puts forward:

  • Matcha latte, a nod to the brand's Japanese half;
  • Cappuccino with cookies;
  • Pancakes;
  • a tropical lime drink for the heat.

The menu changes, so treat this as a taste rather than a list. What is served on the day, and when the café is open, is on the Desa Kitsuné page.

A Parisian café in a Balinese village

Desa means "village" in Indonesian, and Desa Kitsuné presents itself as exactly that: a 5,000-square-metre garden in the heart of Canggu "offering chic Parisian café culture, serene outdoor lounging, gourmet dining, designer shopping and lively parties". It reflects, in its own words, Bali's "relax, dine and celebrate" culture, "inviting guests to enjoy the offerings all day and night-long".

Café Kitsuné is the "relax" part. It is the easiest way into the village: no booking, no dress code, no age rule of the kind that applies to the parties.

A day at the village

The café works best as the start of something longer:

  1. Morning or afternoon: coffee and a pastry at Café Kitsuné, outdoors in the garden setting.
  2. Shopping: the Maison Kitsuné boutique on the same site carries the brand's collections and special projects; more in Maison Kitsuné Bali.
  3. Lunch or dinner: Ina Ré, the village restaurant, where Chilean chef Cristian Encina brings together Mediterranean flavours and Latin American street food; its own guide is Ina Ré Bali.
  4. On a Tuesday or a Friday: stay for the garden party.

From coffee to the garden party

Every Tuesday and Friday the Garden becomes the party, "rain or shine" in the venue's words: guest DJs on Tuesdays, Bali-based DJs on Fridays, with occasional one-off nights. The café and the party share an address, but not the same rules:

  • The party is 21+, valid government ID may be required, and the dress code is smart casual: no flip-flops, no sportswear, no beer-branded singlets, no torn or cut-off clothing, no baggy clothing, no chains, no boots or hard-sole shoes. Details in the Desa Kitsuné dress code.
  • Entry is separate. A coffee or a dinner on site does not put you on the guestlist. Each guest registers individually for each night on the night's page; it is free, and gives complimentary entry before that night's cutoff, which is earlier for men than for women, with a reduced fee after it. Some nights are ticketed only. Full rules in the Desa Kitsuné guestlist.
  • A table in the garden is the only reserved space at the party, with a minimum spend set by the venue for the night. FirstBali books it, and it is yours once Desa Kitsuné confirms it.

How to turn an afternoon into a night is laid out in Desa Kitsuné, dinner and party.

Practical points

  • Where: Jalan Munduk Catu, Canggu, inside Desa Kitsuné.
  • Getting there: Canggu's roads are busy, especially towards evening; getting to Desa Kitsuné, and home covers the drop-off and the return, and FirstBali can arrange a driver through transport.
  • Hours: on the venue page, which follows the venue's own listing; we do not print them.

The coming garden nights

Through FirstBali

Café Kitsuné needs no booking. For the rest of the day, tell the concierge the date and how many you are: FirstBali asks Ina Ré for a table, books a garden table with the venue on a party night, or sends you the link to that night's guestlist, where you register yourself.
