Zumana Sunday: a Sunday on the sand at Sunset Bay

Zumana Sunday is the beach club's own Sunday, every week at Sunset Bay in Kuta: an afternoon by the sea that turns into a sunset and a night. Join the night's guestlist early, or book a daybed.

Zumana Sunday is the Sunday of Zumana, the Savaya Group's beach club at Sunset Bay in Kuta, and it happens every week. It is one of the club's three regular days, with Zumana Monday and Zumana Tuesday: an afternoon on the sand that becomes a sunset and then a night on the open-air dance floor. To go, open the Sunday you want below and join its guestlist, or ask the concierge for a daybed or a table.

What a Zumana Sunday is

Zumana names its regular days after itself, and Sunday is the first of them. Unlike the headliner nights later in the week, a Sunday is not built around one announced artist: it is the house's own day, the same name and the same idea every week, which makes it the easiest Zumana day to plan before you land.

The shape follows the one the whole club was designed around. Zumana's own website describes the day like this: "The shore wakes slowly. Salt in the air, light on the water, and the kind of warmth that asks nothing of you." Then the sunset, "the moment ZUMANA was built for", and after it the night: "When the sun drops, the shore transforms. The music rises, the energy deepens."

A Sunday is that arc, without the pressure of a big-name night.

The setting

Zumana sits on the beachfront at Sunset Bay, on Jalan Kartika Plaza in Kuta, and was designed by Rockwell Group. The club is laid out as beachfront daybeds, poolside spaces, bars and an open-air dance floor, with the restaurant, Manuza, on site. Its centrepiece is ZENÍA, "The Eternal Host", a 10-metre sculpture by Daniel Popper made with Balinese artisans from Ubud.

How to get in on a Sunday

The guestlist. On Zumana's regular days, Sunday included, the guestlist gives complimentary entry during an afternoon window, with a reduced entry fee after it. The window is shown on each Sunday's page; we do not publish it. Joining is free, each person registers individually for each date, and a digital ticket arrives by email. Registration "does not guarantee complimentary entry", in the venue's words, and mixed groups and couples are strongly preferred. Terms are set date by date, so the page for your Sunday decides. The registration form is walked through in the Zumana guestlist guide.

A daybed or a table. For a reserved place facing the water, or a base by the dance floor once the sun is down, take a table. Each Sunday's Table button opens the venue's own map for that date when Zumana publishes one; the minimum spend is set by Zumana for that day. FirstBali books the table with the venue, and it is yours once Zumana confirms it. A table is also the only way to leave and come back in: re-entry is only allowed with a table reservation. How the map reads is in Zumana table booking.

Why the afternoon matters

Because the complimentary guestlist window on regular days falls in the afternoon, Sunday rewards the people who come for the light rather than after it. Arrive early, settle in, and you have the sunset and the evening in one stay. Arriving late is possible, but the free window will have passed and the reduced fee applies.

The door

Zumana's door rules are the same every day:

  • 21+, with a valid photo ID;
  • smart casual or "upscale beach chic": no work jeans or denim, no beer-branded singlets, no cut-off clothing, no athletic sportswear, no flip-flops;
  • swimwear in the pools only.

Details in the Zumana dress code.

Making a weekend of it

  • Saturday first. The night before a Zumana Sunday is Ritual of the Sun, Zumana's Saturday sunset night with a guest: Ritual of the Sun.
  • Monday next. Zumana Monday is another regular day, or cross to Uluwatu for Savaya's Last Light, its Monday sunset night.
  • Sunday lunch first. For a long lunch before the beach, see Sunday brunch in Bali.
  • The rest of the week is mapped day by day in Zumana's weekly nights.

Getting there and back

Kuta is where many visitors stay, and Zumana is on the beachfront road at Sunset Bay. The roads along the coast fill up towards sunset, so leave earlier than seems necessary, and book the way home before you go: how to get to Zumana covers the drop-off and the return, and FirstBali can add a car with a driver.
