ZENÍA is the 10-metre sculpture at the heart of Zumana, the Savaya Group beach club at Sunset Bay in Kuta. Her name means "The Eternal Host": she is the first face guests see when they arrive. The artist Daniel Popper made her over nearly two years with a team of Balinese artisans in Ubud, and as you walk through the venue her mask opens onto a second view, framed by the ocean and the open-air dance floor she anchors.

Who ZENÍA is
Zumana introduced her in a story titled "Meet ZENÍA", with a subtitle that sums her up: "The Eternal Host of Zumana Bali." In the venue's words, she is "a monumental sculptural installation", positioned overlooking the shores of Sunset Bay Kuta, "serving as both a landmark and the symbolic centrepiece of the destination."
She is surrounded by roots, leaves and organic forms, and was designed, Zumana says, "as a symbol of connection, growth, and discovery, greeting visitors with open arms against the backdrop of Bali's iconic coastline."
The artist and the making
ZENÍA is the work of Daniel Popper, whom Zumana describes as an "internationally acclaimed artist". She was created over nearly two years, "through a close collaboration between Daniel Popper and a dedicated team of Balinese artisans based in Ubud, many of whom he has worked alongside for over a decade."
Zumana calls the result "one of Popper's largest and most detailed sculptures to date, blending contemporary art with the craftsmanship and creative spirit of Bali." The artisans' home, Ubud, is Bali's craft and arts centre in the hills — our Ubud guide covers the town.
Two faces: arriving, then turning round
The idea of ZENÍA is that you see her twice.
- On arrival, she is the host: the 10-metre figure that greets you as you come in, with open arms.
- Further in, she reveals what Zumana calls "a second perspective": "Her mask opens to expose her inner beauty, framed by the ocean beyond and the open-air performance space she anchors."
That second view is the one people remember. It faces the sea at Sunset Bay — Kuta's beach lies on the western side of the peninsula, so the sun goes down in front of you — and it looks onto the dance floor, so the sculpture frames both the sunset and the night that follows.
ZENÍA and the rest of Zumana
Zumana was designed by Rockwell Group around beachfront daybeds, poolside spaces, bars and an open-air dance floor, with a restaurant called Manuza. The venue presents itself as a place where music, art, dining and design meet, "with ZENÍA serving as its symbolic heart", and Zumana's own sign-off — "Come Curious. Leave Unchained." — is written for her.
She also gives her name to one of the rotating Thursdays in Zumana's week: see Zumana's weekly nights for how the week is shaped, and the calendar on this page for what is on.
For Zumana, she is "more than a work of art": she reflects "a place of welcome, discovery, and transformation", inspired by "music, nature, and the energy that has drawn generations to Kuta's shoreline."
Seeing ZENÍA
ZENÍA stands inside Zumana, so seeing her means visiting the beach club. A few things to know before you go:
- The door is 21+, with the original of a valid passport or driver's licence.
- The afternoon is the easy way in. The regular days — Zumana Sunday, Monday and Tuesday — begin in the afternoon, when you can see the sculpture in daylight and stay for the sunset. Saturday is Ritual of the Sun.
- Photos for yourself, yes; a production, no. Professional cameras, tripods and drones are on Zumana's list of prohibited items.
- Payment is card or QRIS only, and the dress is smart casual — see what to bring to Zumana.
If you want to sit with her in view, ask for a table: a daybed or sofa is the only reserved space, and the night's map shows where each one sits. FirstBali asks Zumana, and the table is yours once Zumana confirms it.
