What to bring to a Bali beach club: the day bag

For a Bali beach club day, bring an original photo ID, a card that works abroad, swimwear, sun protection and a change of clothes for the evening, all in one small bag. Leave the rest at the villa.

For a beach club day in Bali, one small bag is enough: an original photo ID, a card that works abroad, your phone, swimwear, sun protection and a change of clothes if the day runs into the evening. Leave luggage, outside food and drink and anything valuable you would not want on a sunbed at the villa. The club's own rules decide what passes its door, so check them first; what follows is the bag we would pack, marked clearly as our advice.

The two things the door may ask for

Your photo ID, the original

Zumana, like Savaya and Desa Kitsuné, is 21+ and asks for a valid photo ID: a passport or a driver's licence. Finns Beach Club and El Kabron's Hedonism Lounge are adults-only. A photo of your passport on your phone is not the same thing; the ID and passport guide explains why.

A way to pay

Savaya is cashless. Other clubs set their own rules, so a card that works abroad, and a phone that can pay, is the safe pair. Ask the club, or the concierge, if you are unsure.

The day bag, item by item

Our advice, for a day by the pool and the sea:

  1. Swimwear, worn or packed. Most clubs have pools; Luna Beach Club on the Tabanan cliffs adds jumping platforms and a water slide.
  2. Sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. The best seats face the sun.
  3. A light cover-up for lunch at the restaurant and the walk through the club.
  4. Sandals that can get wet, and that you can walk in on sand and stairs.
  5. A dry change for the evening if you are staying: something smart casual, and shoes to match. The beach club dress code has each club's words.
  6. A small bag that closes, with a waterproof pouch for your phone and card.
  7. Any medication you need for the day, in its original packaging.

Towels: some clubs provide them with a seat. White Rock lists towels and amenities with its beds and suites. Ask the club for yours rather than packing a beach towel by habit.

White Rock Beach Club

White Rock Beach Club

Beach clubs · Uluwatu

White Rock Beach Club sits on Melasti Beach in Ungasan, near Uluwatu, at the end of the cliff. Guests settle on daybeds, sofas or cabanas around a lagoon pool and a rock pool; families have a kids' pool and a kids' menu. There is a spa, a large covered restaurant serving local and international dishes, and enclosed, air-conditioned party suites overlooking the pool and the ocean. Resident DJs play every day, and foam parties run at weekends. The club also hosts weddings and events.

Le Bleu

Le Bleu

Beach clubs · Nusa Dua

Le Bleu by K Club is a beachfront restaurant and beach club on Nusa Dua Beach, in the ITDC resort area, run by the K-Club Group. The look is French Riviera by way of Bali, all blue and white, with sunbeds, cabanas, terraces and an indoor dining room. The kitchen leans on seafood, from lobster linguine to yellowfin tuna tataki, with vegetarian and vegan options. The weekly programme mixes yoga, cocktail workshops, beach games and festive Sunday gatherings with a DJ.

Luna Beach Club

Luna Beach Club

Beach clubs · Tabanan

Luna Beach Club is perched on the cliffs of the Tabanan coast, inside Nuanu Creative City by Nyanyi Beach, west of Canggu. Its bamboo architecture by Inspiral Architects won a Silver award for sustainable and green architecture at the 2024 International Architecture & Design Awards. The complex brings together two pools, jumping platforms and a water slide, Restaurant 369, the Utopia Cave Club and the Gardenia bamboo tree pods. DJs play through sunset, and evenings bring fire and light shows.

What to leave at the villa

  • Luggage and big bags. Savaya allows no luggage and has limited lockers; a beach club is not a left-luggage office either. Bags and lockers covers the rules.
  • Outside food and drink. Savaya does not allow them; at other clubs, assume the same unless told otherwise.
  • Portable speakers. The DJ sets the sound.
  • Valuables you do not need. A sunbed is not a safe.

If the day becomes a night

This is where most day bags fail. A beach club afternoon in wet swimwear does not become a smart casual evening on its own. At Zumana, at Sunset Bay in Kuta, the day can run into the night on the same site, and the programme changes through the week, from Ritual of the Sun on Saturdays to Zumana Sunday. Savaya's Monday "Last Light" is a sunset set from The Cube, on the Uluwatu clifftop. Desa Kitsuné's garden parties in Canggu run every Tuesday and Friday, rain or shine; its pool is decorative, so the swimwear stays in the bag.

Pack the change of clothes, a light layer and, for Desa Kitsuné's "rain or shine" nights, something for a wet evening. Re-entry at Savaya and Zumana is only with a table, so a trip back to the car for a forgotten jacket may not be possible.

The bag for children

At a family club such as White Rock, with its kids' pool and kids' menu, or Le Bleu in Nusa Dua, add what a child needs for a full day in the sun: a hat, a change of clothes and the snacks or items the club allows. Rules by age differ from club to club, as the family-friendly beach clubs guide shows.

What the concierge sorts instead

Some things do not fit in a bag. A driver who waits through the day holds the evening clothes in the car; a reserved seat removes the need to arrive early with a towel. Tell the concierge the club, the date and the group, and the team checks what can be arranged, from the seat to a car through transport. Nothing is booked until the club confirms it. An assistant answers at any hour, the team through the Bali day and evening.

Questions we get asked

+Do I need my passport at a Bali beach club?

At 21+ clubs such as Zumana, bring an original passport or driver's licence. A photo on your phone is not the same.

+Do beach clubs provide towels?

Some do with a seat: White Rock lists towels with its beds and suites. Ask the club for yours.

+Can I bring my own food and drink?

Savaya does not allow outside food or drink. Assume the same elsewhere unless the club tells you otherwise.

+Can I bring a suitcase before my flight?

Savaya allows no luggage and has limited lockers. Leave bags at the villa or with a driver.

+Should I bring swimwear to Desa Kitsuné?

No. Its pool is decorative and not for swimming; the parties are smart casual.
