Dinner with a view in Bali: ocean, rice fields, jungle

Where to have dinner with a view in Bali, by view: the ocean from the cliffs at El Kabron and Rock Bar, the beach at Le Bleu, rice fields at Sardine, jungle at Akar, an aquarium at Koral.

For dinner with an ocean view in Bali, go south to the cliffs: El Kabron in Uluwatu has a Sunset Theater built for sunset dinners, and Rock Bar in Jimbaran serves Mediterranean dinner after the sun goes down over the sea. For the beach, Le Bleu in Nusa Dua. For rice fields, Sardine in Seminyak. For the jungle, Akar near Ubud. FirstBali asks for the table through the concierge.

Choose the view, then the restaurant

Bali offers four very different backdrops: the Indian Ocean from the limestone cliffs of the Bukit, the sand of the east-coast beaches, the rice paddies that still survive between Seminyak's streets, and the jungle around Ubud. A cliff dinner is about the sunset; a rice-field dinner is about the evening light and the quiet; a jungle dinner is about the setting. For drinks rather than dinner, our sunset spots guide is the better read.

The ocean from the cliffs: El Kabron and Rock Bar

El Kabron has stood on the Pecatu cliffs in Uluwatu. Its oceanfront Mediterranean restaurant promises "panoramic ocean views and sunsets" with "fresh seafood, oysters on ice, steak and paella", and the Sunset Theater at the cliff edge is "designed for a unique, theater-like sunset dining experience". This is the address for the sunset dinner itself. Its sunset parties bring DJs with live musicians, so ask for the Sunset Theater if dinner is the point. More in the El Kabron guide.

Rock Bar, AYANA Bali's bar on the rocks of Jimbaran, offers "panoramic views of the cobalt blue sea" from areas spread along the cliff, reached by inclinator. Dinner follows the sunset: Mediterranean tapas built on the seafood of Jimbaran Bay, with cocktails inspired by the colours of the sea, while the DJs play on. Non-resident visitors can reserve; the Round Deck is kept for villa guests and the Top Bar for hotel guests, and payment is by card or QR only. See the Rock Bar guide.

The ocean from a resort: The Apurva Kempinski

On the Nusa Dua cliffs, The Apurva Kempinski faces the Indian Ocean. L'Atelier by Cyril Kongo is a lounge with ocean views and Mediterranean tapas, and Reef Beach Club sits on the sand beside its infinity pool. For a view of a different kind, Koral, which the hotel presents as Bali's first aquarium restaurant, serves set and tasting menus beside the tanks, adults only at dinner. Every table is in our Apurva Kempinski guide.

The beach: Le Bleu, Nusa Dua

Le Bleu by K Club sits "right on the water's edge" of Nusa Dua Beach, facing "the rolling waves of the Indian Ocean", and offers "a romantic candlelight dinner by the beach". The kitchen leans on seafood, from lobster linguine to yellowfin tuna tataki, with vegetarian and vegan dishes. At lunch, the view turns the other way, over its garden and paddies.

On the west coast, Regent Bali Canggu's Beach House pairs its pool and the ocean breeze with seafood and craft cocktails on Batu Bolong.

Rice fields: Sardine, Seminyak

Sardine by K-Club is a rare thing in Seminyak: dinner on a terrace "overlooking Bali's iconic rice fields", in an open-air bamboo building, with the paddies lit up after dark. The daily catch is cooked in a modern Mediterranean style, and there is a vegetarian set menu. The evening can continue next door at Les Toilettes, the group's club. See the Sardine guide.

The jungle: Akar, Ubud

Akar describes itself as the place "where jungle serenity meets refined dining". K Club's steakhouse sits in the greenery of Kedisan, Tegallalang, north of Ubud, over two floors with two bars and an open kitchen, grilling Australian and Japanese cuts over charcoal. On Friday and Saturday nights the jungle dinner turns festive, with DJs, dancers and a laser show; choose another night for calm. More in the Akar guide.

Cliffs in the west: Luna, Tabanan

Luna Beach Club is perched on the cliffs of the Tabanan coast, inside Nuanu Creative City. Its restaurant is part of the complex, and evenings bring fire and light shows, which makes it a dinner with a spectacle rather than a quiet one.

Getting the best seat

  • Ask for the front row when you book, not on arrival: the edge tables go first.
  • For a sunset dinner, ask the concierge when to arrive; we check the timing with the venue for your date.
  • Rain changes everything. Ask whether the venue has a covered fallback before the evening.
  • Plan the ride. The cliff addresses are far from Canggu and Seminyak; a private driver waits while you eat.

Booking

Tell the concierge the date, the number of guests and the view you want. We ask the restaurant on your behalf, pass on any terms it sets, and the table is yours once the restaurant confirms. For a proposal or an anniversary, read the romantic dinner guide.
